George was born in 1890 in Mark. The family lived in Harp Road. On leaving school he found employment as a greengrocer. He then enlisted in the Royal Marines Light Infantry (RMLI) and served as a gunner on cruisers. In July 1913, he was drafted to the wooden-hulled training ship HMS Impregnable anchored off Plymouth Hoe where he died from disease on 22 October 1914, aged 24 years, six weeks after the opening of the First World War on 4 August. George is buried in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.
